Herero, San, Himba, Damara to plemiona, które zamieszkują Namibię. Uwagę przyciągają zwykle Herero, San i Himba. Każde ze względu na odrębną kulturę oraz za sprawą atrybutów zewnętrznych. Ich wygląd i strój, lub jego … brak, są bardzo jasną  deklaracją przynależności do jednej z wymienionych społeczności.
Po dobrze przespanej nocy ruszamy spod monumentalnej skały, której nazwa doskonale oddaje jej kształt – Vingerklip (cała okolica przypomina Monument Valley w USA). W odległości zaledwie 50 km od Khorixas w kierunku Opuwo trafiamy na skamieniały las oraz od dawna wypatrywane welwiczje. Wielu poszukuje ich w okolicach Swakopmund. Są i tam – jednak w Damarlandzie i Kuene występują zdecydowanie częściej. Te długowieczne rośliny (mają i po kilka tysięcy lat) choć nie grzeszą urodą, są bardzo wrażliwe na … dotyk. Oglądając je warto o tym pamiętać, nie podchodzić zbyt blisko, bo nie tylko liście, ale i korzenie są wątłego zdrowia (a kto byłby w tym wieku?:)).

Himba żyją głównie w Kuene w okolicach Opuwo. Część z nich mieszka też po drugiej stronie granicy w Angoli. Są nomadami, choć nie codziennie poszukują nowego miejsca na obóz. Chętnie zaglądają do większych miast licząc na grosz (turyści) i strawę. Napisano już wiele o ich tradycjach i … kosmetyce ciała. Z obserwacji nieuzbrojonym okiem oraz według opinii obecnej na wyjeździe najlepszej dermatolog w Polsce (!) skóra ich kobiet traktowana otjize (mieszanka koziego masła i ochry) jest wyjątkowo delikatna, zdrowa i wolna od zanieczyszczeń. Sprawa o tyle godna uwagi, że dostęp do wody jest tu bardzo utrudniony i kąpiel jest dla nich luksusem. Korzystają z niej może kilka razy w życiu (nasze dzieci były zachwycone tą informacją;)). Nie tylko kobiety, ale i mężczyźni Himba dbają o urodę. Szczególną uwagę poświęcają pielęgnacji włosów. Sposób zaplatania i ich ułożenie informują o statusie członka plemienia. Młode niezamężne dziewczyny zakrywają twarz dwoma czarnymi warkoczami (popiół zamiast ochry), podczas gdy posiadające męża i co ważne potomstwo, noszą długie ‘rurki’ zakończone charakterystycznymi pomponami.

Czy łatwo jest być Himba? Hm mężczyznom łatwiej 😉. Wystarczy, że gospodarz wybuduje dom i zapewni bezpieczeństwo. Kobiety i dzieci to ekipa remontowa, kucharze, rolnicy i pasterze w jednym. Innymi słowy pan domu siedzi na werandzie, ogarnia swym wzrokiem posiadłość i poddanych wypatrując ewentualnego … lwa.

Herero, San, Himba and Damara this tribes inhabit Namibia. The Herero, San and Himba tend to attract attention due to the culture and through the external attributes. Their appearance and dress, or … no dress at all are very clear declaration of belonging to one of these communities.

We had a very good sleep at the Vingeklip Lodge this night. We leave behind the monumental rock and head towards Opuwo using again gravel track (the area around Vingerklip resembles Monument Valley in the USA).

Just 50 km from Khorixas you will find the petrified forest on your right. The place is surrounded with world famous welwitschia plants. They occur much more frequently here If you have not seen them yet in the area of Swakopmund. These long-lived plants (the age is difficult to assess, but they are living 1000 years or more) are rather ugly in look, but very sensitive to … touch. When you watch them it is worth remembering not get too close. Not only the leaves, but also the roots are … of poor health (and who would be at this age? :)).

Himba live mainly in Kuene region around Opuwo. Some of them also stay across the border in Angola. They are nomads, although not every day moving with their livestock to new sites. We can find them also in larger cities hoping for a penny (tourists) and food. There has been written a lot about their traditions and … cosmetic treatments. My observations supported by the opinion of the current best dermatologist in Poland (!) say that skin of Himba women treated with otjize (a mixture of goat butterfat and ocher) is extremely delicate, healthy and free from contamination. It’s remarkable because the access to water is very limited and taking a shower is a luxury here. Not only women, but also men care about beauty. They devote special attention to hair care. The splicing and hair arrangement indicate the status of a member of the tribe. Young unmarried girls cover their face with two black braids (use ash instead of ocher), while this having a husband, wear long ‘tube’ finished with “pompoms”.

Is it worth to be a member of a Himba tribe? As a man I would say definitely yes! It’s very … easy. The host has to build a house and provide security. The lives of women and children is more difficult. They are the repair crew, cooks, farmers and shepherds in one. In other words, you’re sitting on the porch, observing your livestock and looking for possible, but very rare … lion attack.
