Mountain gorillas in Uganda: although nature conservation is a trendy topic – how many times have you had the opportunity to consciously take part in a project that has a direct impact on actual action? In Uganda – one of the three countries where the endangered mountain gorilla species lives – many projects are underway to protect these beautiful creatures. As a testament to the effectiveness of the efforts, back in 1981, the estimated number of mountain gorillas living in the wild was 254 individuals. Today, there are more than 1,000! The privilege of seeing these animals in their natural habitat requires a purchase of an expensive permit. These funds, however, go entirely towards their conservation. The mountain gorillas in Uganda are an important, but not the only, objective of our expedition. On our way to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, we will see the remarkable shoebill, chimpanzees in Kyambura Canyon, tree lions in Ishasha and many other creatures in the rich ecosystem of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Why do I call this trip an expedition and not a tourist getaway? We don’t move from attraction to attraction passing one highlight after another. If the opportunity arises for us to see something unusual, or experience a new relationship – we are open to changing the plan, and maybe it leads to unique discoveries? Milesaway’s motto?
